V-STARS Photogrammetry in Practice Precision Measurement in Unstable Environments
article eodetic Systems V-STARS
When structures move, machinery vibrates, or the measurement platform is unstable, conventional metrology can become difficult. V-STARS captures accurate 3D measurements rapidly, helping maintain precision even when the environment itself is working against you.

When Traditional Metrology Isn't Enough

Many large-scale measurement applications take place in environments where stability cannot be guaranteed. Shipyards, manufacturing plants, wind turbine installations, aerospace facilities, and construction sites often experience vibration, movement, changing temperatures, or restricted access.

These conditions can limit the effectiveness of traditional coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and even laser trackers, particularly when measurements need to be taken on large or moving structures.

Unlike conventional metrology systems that continuously track a probe or reflector, V-STARS uses high-resolution digital photography combined with advanced photogrammetric software. Images are captured from multiple positions and processed to calculate highly accurate 3D coordinates.

Measurement Without a Fixed Camera Position

Unlike systems that depend on maintaining a fixed relationship between the measuring instrument and the object, V-STARS determines the camera position from the photographed reference points. This allows measurements to be taken from different positions around the object, even when the camera is mounted on a lift, ladder, scaffolding, or another moving platform.

The result is a highly flexible measurement process that can reach large or difficult-to-access areas without requiring the equipment to remain perfectly stationary throughout the survey.

The advantage of V-STARS is not just its accuracy - it is the ability to achieve that accuracy in environments where movement, vibration and limited access make conventional measurement difficult.

Fast Data Capture, Minimal Downtime

Another important advantage is speed. Thousands of measurement points can be captured during a short photographic session, often in just a few minutes. Since there is no lengthy equipment warm-up or extensive setup, production downtime is kept to a minimum.

The non-contact nature of photogrammetry also makes V-STARS ideal for measuring delicate components that could deform if touched by conventional measuring equipment. Repeat inspections are equally efficient, making the system well suited to deformation studies, quality control, and assembly verification.

A Flexible Solution for Large-Scale Metrology

As manufacturing tolerances become tighter and structures become larger, measurement systems must perform reliably in real working conditions rather than only in controlled laboratories.

Geodetic Systems V-STARS combines portability, high accuracy, rapid data capture, and exceptional repeatability to provide an effective solution for demanding industrial applications. Where vibration, movement, or access limitations make other technologies difficult to use, V-STARS continues to deliver the precision needed for confident decision-making and reliable quality assurance.
