Recreating Existing Components with QuickSurface

When original drawings or CAD files are no longer available, recreating an existing component can present a significant engineering challenge.

This is particularly true for older or obsolete machinery, where replacement parts may still be required even though the original design data has been lost or is no longer accessible.

3D scanning provides an accurate digital representation of the physical component, but the resulting mesh is not the same as a usable CAD model. To turn scanned geometry into editable engineering data, the individual features and surfaces need to be reconstructed from the scan.

QuickSurface is purpose-built for this reverse-engineering process. It provides the tools needed to analyse 3D scan data, recognise and recreate geometric features, and build an editable CAD model that can be used for further design, manufacturing or modification.

From Scan Data to CAD

The process starts by capturing the physical component with a suitable 3D scanner. The resulting mesh can then be imported into QuickSurface, where areas of interest can be selected and geometric features extracted.

Planes, cylinders and spheres can be reconstructed from the scan, while sketches, extrusions, revolved surfaces and freeform surfaces can be created for more complex geometry. Features can also be constrained and related to one another to preserve the design intent of the original component.

The result is not simply a digital copy of the surface. QuickSurface can create a hybrid, parametric CAD model that can be edited and developed further

Recreating Legacy Components

One of the most useful applications is the recreation of parts for older or obsolete equipment.

A machine may remain perfectly serviceable even though replacement components are no longer available. Original CAD files may have been lost, or the manufacturer may no longer exist. In these cases, the physical component itself provides the reference for creating a replacement.

The same approach can be used where a part has been modified during its service life and the current physical version differs from the original drawings.

More Than Just a Replacement

As manufacturing tolerances become tighter and structures become larger, measurement systems must perform reliably in real working conditions rather than only in controlled laboratories.

Reverse engineering does not have to mean making an exact copy.

Once the scanned component has been converted into CAD, the model can become the starting point for redesign. Dimensions or features can be changed, new elements added, or the component adapted to work with newer equipment.

QuickSurface models can be exported in standard STEP or IGES formats for use in other CAD/CAM systems. Its QSConnect functionality can also transfer parametric history to SOLIDWORKS for mechanical parts.

From Physical Part to Digital Asset

The combination of 3D scanning and reverse-engineering software means that missing CAD data no longer has to prevent a component from being reproduced or redesigned.
